What are dentures?

Dentures are removable dental appliances used to replace one or more missing teeth. They are designed to support appearance, chewing function and speech following tooth loss.

Dentures may be a suitable treatment option for some patients and are custom-made to fit the individual. At Tailored Teeth Burwood, dentures are manufactured through the Smile On Lab on the Central Coast using quality materials and tailored to each patient’s needs.

Types of dentures:

Dentures can be classified into three main types:

1. Complete Dentures:

These are used when all teeth in either the upper or lower jaw are missing. Complete dentures can be further divided into:

Conventional Dentures
These are fitted after any remaining teeth have been removed and the gums and supporting tissues have healed.

Immediate Dentures
These are inserted shortly after tooth removal, allowing patients to have replacement teeth during the healing period. As the gums and underlying bone change during healing, adjustments may be required.

2. Implant Retained Dentures:

Implant-retained dentures are attached to dental implants placed in the jaw. For some patients, this may provide additional support and retention compared to conventional dentures.

Suitability for implant-retained dentures depends on individual circumstances and will be determined following a comprehensive assessment and discussion of available treatment options.

3. Partial Dentures:

Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. They consist of replacement teeth attached to a gum-coloured base and are designed to fit around existing teeth.

Partial dentures can help replace missing teeth and may assist in maintaining the position of remaining teeth. Treatment recommendations will depend on each patient’s oral health needs, goals and existing dentition.
